The West Gate Tunnel will cut travel times by up to 20 minutes, introduced 24/7 truck bans on local inner-west streets, and improved road safety, air quality and noise levels, while also providing a more efficient freight route to the Port of Melbourne.
The West Gate Tunnel Project has transformed travel between Melbourne’s west and the city, providing a vital alternative to the West Gate Bridge. The project delivered four additional lanes on the West Gate Freeway, twin tunnels under Yarraville, and a new bridge over the Maribyrnong River linking to an elevated roadway above Footscray Road. It also included 14 km of new and upgraded walking and cycling paths, creating a continuous connection from Werribee to the city.
