Freyssinet Australia delivered an innovative structural remediation solution for a severely corroded steel suspension rod above Hall 5 at the Sydney Convention & Exhibition Centre (SCEC). By designing a unique bracket and external post-tensioning system, we successfully stabilized the rod without the need for internal struts or major disruption to the facility. This approach preserved full use of the car park below and worked within the roof’s strict loading limits, showcasing Freyssinet’s expertise in creative, minimally invasive structural repairs.

Freyssinet Scope

  • Designed and installed a bespoke bracket system at upper and lower rod pins
  • Engineered and installed lightweight scaffolding and platform across roof points
  • Accessed upper rod pins via rope access techniques
  • Installed and tensioned external post-tensioning cables to transfer load
  • Assessed and cleaned corroded rod area, applying corrosion inhibitor treatment
  • Repaired and strengthened the corroded roof tie rod with epoxy coating
  • Installed and certified roof anchor system for ongoing structural safety
  • Inspected and reported on box gutter laps and aerial stormwater pipes within SCEC
