Freyssinet Australia was engaged by TMR to complete specialist post-tensioning works on the Captain Cook Bridge in Brisbane City. The Captain Cook Bridge is a critical infrastructure asset that connects the M1 Pacific Motorway to Brisbane’s Riverside Expressway and InnerCity Bypass. The 4 halving joints on the bridge required strengthening to extend the service life of the bridge and allow for the increased traffic loading since its construction. The structure consists of 2 separate Northbound and Southbound bridges. Each bridge consisted of a box girder with 3 webs. TMR / RoadTek completed coring and web thickening works on all webs, both sides of each halving joint. A total of 608 Freyssibars were installed, stressed, and grouted across all locations. Each web required vertical, transverse, and longitudinal bars as part of the design. Works were completed from temporary works platforms suspended from the structure, scaffold built off the Goodwill Footbridge that runs under one of the joints, and from the road deck under traffic control. The majority of Freyssinet works were completed during the night shift due to road closures for many of the activities.

Freyssinet Scope

  • Supply of post-tensioning materials including steel corrugated duct, D39 Freyssibar (1200 grade), threaded dead endplates, flat and spherical live end anchorages (bearing plates, washers, and nuts), and permanent plastic grout caps.
  • Threaded end plates used for the following locations: vertical bars so that anchorage finishes within the road surface, transverse bars where the dead-end is external facing, longitudinal bars so that there was no clash with the opposite side of the joint.
  • Complete trial stressing and grouting works to confirm design parameters and methodologies. Install bars and epoxy live and dead-end plates to the concrete surface for even bearing.
  • Stress bars in each web to a prescribed stressing sequence (50% all bars in order prior to 100% stressing) (100% vertical stressing under police traffic holds)
  • Install grout caps, air test, and grout tendons using proprietary grout products.
