The Armadale Line Upgrade, part of Western Australia’s METRONET program, is a major rail infrastructure initiative aimed at improving safety and efficiency along the Armadale Line. The project involves the removal of six level crossings and construction of approximately 4 km of elevated rail viaducts, supported by 530 precast beams (30 m each) and the development of five new stations at Carlisle, Oats Street, Queens Park, Cannington, and Beckenham. Delivered by the Armadale Line Upgrade Alliance (Acciona, BMD Constructions, WSP, and AECOM), the upgrade enhances transport capacity, reduces congestion, and reconnects communities through modern engineering solutions and urban renewal beneath the viaducts.

Freyssinet Scope

  • Freyssinet played a key role in the project’s structural design and construction methodology by supplying 1,114 project‑specific spherical bearings
  • Early in design, we influenced specifications to adopt spherical instead of elastomeric bearings, improving durability, performance, and reducing temporary works
  • Integration into deck erection methodology, eliminating temporary jacks and enabling direct beam placement on bearings.
  • Local fabrication of cast-in plates combined with industrialized bearing production in Italy to meet strict lead times.
  • Value-engineered solutions that accommodated additional rotations and slopes, reducing site complexity and improving safety.
  • Customized testing philosophy, inspired by European standards, ensuring compliance and reliability while minimizing unnecessary testing.
This streamlined installation, reduced critical‑path activities, and delivered long‑term maintenance benefits, reinforcing Freyssinet’s commitment to innovation and efficiency in major infrastructure projects.
